Maja Ruznic

Maja Ruznic graduated with her Masters from California College of the Arts.  She has since been on the cover of New American Paintings and has been feature by In The Make an incredible blog that interviews West Coast Artists.  Her work definitely has a Marlene Dumas-like feel but more contemporary and just as deep.  She is a new favorite- I love her looseness, story telling, and the awkward honest beauty.

Paul Klee's hand puppets

 The above images are from Paul Klee: Hand Puppets which I found while brousing the book store today. "Between 1916 and 1925 Paul Klee (1879-1940) made some 50 hand puppets for his son, Felix, of which 30 are still in existence. For the heads, he used materials from his own household: beef bones and electrical outlets, bristle brushes, leftover bits of fur and nutshells. Soon he began to sew costumes. These characters and small works, do not pretend to be great art, but at the same time, they are superbly imaginative, sweetly reminiscent of Klee's relationships with his family, and beautifully illustrative of the artistic and social developments of the time. Readers will see the chronological proximity of Dada and Kurt Schwitters's collages in Klee's Matchbox Ghost; the German National caricatures one of the era's more ominous political types. An introductory essay tracks the work's links to other avant-garde puppetry and to Klee's sculptural works, and notes his connections to the theater. For their part, Klee's son Felix and his grandson Alexander tell the story of how the figures were created."

Max Colby

Max Colby, graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, embroiders directly on to prints, creating elaborate costumes for them and in turn gives the blob-like images more of a figurative quality.  They are beautiful on their own, but amazing to see in a series.  I can see these as sketches for larger sculptures as well.

Torsten Schumann

Torsten Schumann's work has this very awkward attractive sensibility.  The compositions are really strong and their perspectives create these split second surreal scenes in banal moments of the everyday.  His eye is so sharp to catch some of these images. You can tell he's just really aware- and really seeing everything around him in his particular way.  He was born in Dresden, Germany and is currently based in Berlin.

The Loneliest Planet

 The Loneliest Planet- I would have posted the trailer but it just wasn't good.  It made the movie seem like a thriller- when it's really not.  I had never heard of this movie till I found it on Netflix when I looked up Gael Garcia Bernal.  I think most of his movie roles are really smart and he's just really beautiful.  The movie explores the intimate, personal, even ordinary moments between two lovers as they travel through the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia.  Their relationship challenged by the adventure of being in new unknown territory.  I love the way these two feel together immediately as the movie begins- it's a familiar feeling of deep love- the intimate details one knows about the other and how they take care of each other.  Definitely a slower movie- most of the conversation is felt within their silences. It is well done and understated.

A beautiful thirty second video time-lapse by Cy Kuckenbaker of 5 hours of airplane landings! Kuckenbaker is from San Diego, California was inspired by Ho-Yeol Ryu's photo composite in made 2005 at Hanover airport above. Talk about inspiration--both beautiful perspectives of a similar idea.

This trailer is so moving.  I love the idea- the visual- the inspiration.  Traveling through Latin America I was continuously saddened by how practicing and studying any kind of arts was looked at as such a luxury, much more than here in the states.  I firmly believe those barrier should be broken and made accessible to everyone.  It gives children another way to tell their stories and feel confident.  I can't wait to see this movie.

The Mine Kafon

 

Massoud Hassani's Mine Kafon reminded me of Theo Jensen's wind powered pieces but with a life saving element.  They are not only interesting to look at, but they hold a very important purpose.  I love how his design came directly from his experience of playing in the deserts as a child- with using what they had around. It is also super admirable that he came back to his homeland and decided to change things with that which he learned away from home- such a beautiful idea- and invention.

New York Times wrote an article about the artist Francis Upritchard and furniture designer Martino Gamper's home in London’s Hackney district.  I love seeing two successful artists in love-sharing space together in their home. Super good.
