Erwin Wurm

“I knew from a fairly early age, about 15 or so, that I wanted to be an artist. The problem was, my father was a detective in the police. In his view, artists were almost as suspect as criminals”, explains Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. He obviously withstood his father’s objections to his artistic ambitions and followed his vocation. Good for him and for us, because Edwin Wurm is now one of the most successful contemporary artists in the Northern hemisphere.
We too love Erwin Wurm. He’s right up there with the zeitgeist. He speaks our language – the language of pop culture, tv, movies, comics and science fiction. And even though he’s had solos at some of the most prestigious museums and art galleries around the globe, Wurm dares not to take art, the art world, or himself all too seriously. “I want to reach more than just an elite circle of insiders”, says Wurm. And he did. Even if you’ve never seen one of Wurm’s shows, you’ll still know his work indirectly from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers ‘Can’t Stop’ music video. The video is nothing less than a tribute to Erwin Wurm’s work. It’s filled with Wurm-style concepts and sculptural jokes inspired by his one-minute sculptures. Big Kudos to the Peppers for recognizing the influence Wurm had on their video."PrettyCoolPeopleInterviews

Nino Cais

I really love Nino Cais' work. He is a Brazilian artist who lives and works in São Paulo.
His poetic portraits that at times feel like performances.  I enjoy what they do and don't present to you.

MANON KÜNDIG - Bowerbird Collection

Bowerbird, the 2012 graduate collection from the Fashion Department at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, of Manon Kündig. A collection inspired in the Bowerbird, a peculiar bird that lives in the tropical areas of New Guinea and Northern Australia, and that uses its colorful fuzz to attract female prospects. With influences from the worlds' subcultures, Google and the Moroccan immigrants that live in the designer's neighborhood in Antwerp.
Layers of intricately printed silk contrast with sequined pants, beaded faux fur, synthetic fringes, lace mittens and socks, and silk scarves covering the models’ faces entirely. The shock of bright colors, textures and prints create a wild cacophony. The collection was born from Kündig’s everlasting fascination with transforming ugliness into pure beauty. We Are Selecters
I love everything about this!

Black Orpheus

Black Orpheus is a glorious movie with it's the colors, Brazilian culture, and throbbing samba.  It was made in 1959 but so ahead of it's time.
Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro) is literally what its title suggests: a retelling of the "Orpheus and Eurydice" legend enacted by black performers. This time the setting is the annual Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Orpheus (Breno Mello) is a streetcar conductor; Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) has just jilted her lover and is attempting to escape his wrath. Orpheus himself falls in love with Eurydice, whereupon her ex-lover, disguised as the Angel of Death shows up and kills Eurydice. To reclaim his lost love, Orpheus enters "Hell" (the Rio morgue) and uses supernatural methods to revive the dead girl. A multi-award winner on the international film scene, Black Orpheus features a samba musical score by Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos JobimNYT
Marpessa Dawn, is easily one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Gorgeous. Watch the movie here. It's so good.

Arcade Fire - "Afterlife"

Arcade Fire performs "Afterlife" live at the YouTube Music Awards. Directed by Spike Jonze.
Their lyric video to clips of Black Orpheus,  one of my favorites!
Directed by Emily Kai Bock and produced by The Creators Project. It's nice to see the same song visualized in such interesting perspectives.  I love them all for different reasons.

To a strange and exciting New Year

Zohar Lazar

Zohar Lazar is definitely a new favorite painter of mine.  I love the cartoony quality while at times expressing drama and sadness. Awesome stuff!

Ewan McGregor: Tested to the limits in Honduras

BBC did this interesting trip to through La Mosquitia, the rainforest of Honduras, with Ewan McGregor.  Above is just a clip of survival tricks of having drinking water by using a banana tree as a well and water filter of sorts.  For the whole story watch the video here.

Junot Díaz

I recently read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz - and I LOVED it.  I love his style, through equal street talk and intellectual speak.  He is so accessible- and brings you right in- connects you and even educates you.  It's the type of book that left me wanting to give it off to someone else immediately so they can experience it too. He won the Pulitzer prize for this book- and he completely deserved it!  I'm excited to start his newest book This Is How You Lose Her.

Brandon Stanton - Humans of New York

-->
"His birthday is coming up. We’re going to shut down the entire block and have an ice sculpture."
“A sculpture of the dog?”
“Life sized.”

"I tend to be cynical about a lot of things, but Maya Angelou is somebody that no matter how much I pick her apart, she still has integrity. She was a victim of incest and rape, and she worked as a stripper. And now she’s a literary icon and Nobel Laureate. It goes to show that life is cumulative, and you can’t devalue any type of experience."
"I spotted these two from a block away.  They were walking away from me, so I chased them down to see if I could photograph the girl for a micro fashion post. When I finally caught up to them, however, I noticed the father was reading to her as they walked"

You’d be hard pressed to find Brandon Stanton, the brain behind storytelling blog turned New York Times bestseller, “Humans of New York,” without a camera in his hands. He needs it for the 5 to 6 portraits he takes each day and posts for his thousands of social media fans and website visitors to see. Stanton turned to photography full time after being laid off from his job as a Chicago bond trader in 2010. He took a chance on an idea he had to take 10,000 portraits of people around New York City and plot them on a map like a census of the metropolitan area. The resulting project has turned into something larger than he ever could have expected. Stanton’s photos are being imitated all over the world (see Humans of India, Humans of Tehran, Humans of Bronx Science and Humans of LaGuardia), and the 29-year-old is garnering major media attention for his capsules of a moment in time. TIME 30 Under 30
I have been following him through his Facebook page.  It's so nice to be reminded of humanity and people's individual stories daily. Love his work.
