Pool of tears
'I wish I hadn't cried so much!' said Alice, as she swam about, trying to find her way out. 'I shall be punished for it, now, I suppose, by being drowned in my own tears! That will be a queer thing, to be sure! However, everything is queer to-day.'
Kiki Smith: Pool of Tears 2 (After Lewis Carroll), 2000.

Cerca de ti es cerca de mí
Integraciones Integrations
Después de todo te amaré After everything, I will love you
Como si fuera siempre antes As if it were always before
Como si de tanto esperar As if, after so much waiting,
Sin que te viera ni llegaras Not seeing you
Estuvieras eternamente And you not coming,
Respirando cerca de mí. You were breathing close to me forever.
Cerca de mí con tus costumbres Close to me with your habits,
Con tu color y tu guitarra With your color and your guitar
Como están juntos los países Just as countries unite
En las lecciones escolares In school room lectures,
Y dos comarcas se confunden And two regions become blurred
Y hay un río cerca de un río And there is a river near a river
Y dos volcanes crecen juntos. And two volcanoes grow together.
Cerca de ti es cerca de mí Close to you is close to me
Y lejos de todo es tu ausencia And your absence is far from everything
Y es color de arcilla la luna And the moon is the color of clay
En la noche del terremoto In the night of quaking earth
Cuando en el terror de la tierra When, in terror of the earth,
Se juntan las raíces All the roots join together
Y se oye sonar el silencio And silence is heard ringing
Con la música del espanto. With the music of fright
El miedo es también un camino. Fear is also a street
Y entre sus piedras pavorosas And among its trembling stones
Puede marchar con cuatro pies Tenderness somehow is able
Y cuatro labios, la ternura. To march with four feet and four lips
Porque sin salir del presente Since without leaving the present
Que es un anillo delicado That is a fragile thing
Tocamos la arena de ayer We touch the sand of yesterday
Y en el mar enseña el amor And in the sea
Un arrebato repetido. Love reveals a repeated fury
YES.YES.YES.Oh Pablo Neruda, you steal my heart every time.

Daito Manabe
I found Daito Manabe a couple years ago and I thought his work was hilarious and odd. The first of his videos I saw was of himself with elecric stimulus on his face. This is of four of his friends. I love how the guy in the right hand corner keeps smiling. He is a pretty amazing programmer.

Lee Bontecue
Lee Bontecue is an old favorite of mine. She was born in 1931 in Rhode Island. I was lucky enough to see her retrospective years ago at the MCA in Chicago. I remember being totally floored by her work in high school. It was like nothing else I had seen at the time. It was between Painting and sculpture -welded metal structures but sewn and painted canvas- and hung on the walls. The spaces in her work are similar to an abyss- deep, dark cavities, that seem like they will suck you right in. They are inspired by paranoia of WWII- the holes represented mouths, eyes, bullet holes, or open wounds- the dark psychological feeling at that time in history. Her work is really beautifully crafted and so interesting to look at.

Being Elmo
I just watched this movie. And maybe I loved it because I was one of those kids that wished they could work with Jim Henson on Dark Crystal or Labyrinth building and playing with puppets... but it was also Kevin Clash, the voice and puppeteer of Elmo. His story is one of those that hits your heart with the power of following your dream against all the opposition- no matter how ridiculous it may seem to everyone else.

The Beginners
Every little detail is so good. The love in this movie is beautiful.
" ...people like us, half of them think things will never work out the other half ...believe in magic."
Jeff Harris: 4,748 Self-Portraits and Counting
There are a lot of photography projects out there of "a photo a day." The ones that catch people's attention I think are the one that are creative in their story telling. Jeff Harris' story is one that speaks to wonder, creativity and human vulnerability. Quite a project.

For Many Latinos, Racial Identity Is More Culture Than Color - NYTimes
This video was posted along with a super interesting New York Times article about the "sharp disconnect between how Latinos view themselves and how the government wants to count them." Read it here.

Zadok Ben David - Black field
Zadok Ben David is an Israeli artist working in London. The piece above Black field is made up of 12,000 small steel cut sculptures that sprout out of the sand below. The surprise element of the piece is as you walk around it you realize the black flowers are beautifully hand panted bright vivid colors on the other side. intricate and beautiful.
